EI in Action: Workplace
The EQ-i 2.0 is now a vital component of Ottawa Hospital's Leadership Academy programme, aimed at fostering self-awareness and other crucial leadership abilities. Emotional intelligence (EI) building is seen as an integral part of career advancement, and thus, the hospital places considerable emphasis on EI development for physicians, leaders, and support staff.
Providing excellent patient care is a daily challenge for hospital staff, who must also navigate typical workplace stressors. While doctors are highly skilled in their areas of expertise, they may lack the communication and interpersonal skills needed to excel as leaders and provide patient-centered care. Extensive research indicates that emotional intelligence is just as critical as cognitive intelligence in modern medical admissions systems. By incorporating emotional intelligence training, the hospital is committed to enhancing patient-focused healthcare and promoting effective leadership.

The Importance of EQ
The medical field recognizes the significance of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and has started utilizing it as a criterion in selecting medical students. Additionally, EI has been integrated into the training component of medical degrees. Surgical programs that are forward-thinking have also started incorporating training and assessment of EI as a fundamental part of their curriculum.
The EQ-i 2.0 tool has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in supporting non-leadership staff who excel in technical skills but may lack personal insight. The core of emotional intelligence involves comprehending and managing one's emotions as well as those of others, particularly in challenging environments. This tool enables the cultivation of skills and competencies essential to EI.
